Special Programs
Art All Ages
Art expression is an important part of an Undercroft education. Even as some schools continue to decrease art funding, art expression is thriving at UMS. All students experience art in the classroom, since materials are always available to them. Primary and Elementary students regularly visit our stand-alone art studio, and Middle School students have art as a regularly scheduled component within their classroom.
Music All Ages
All students go to music class on a regular basis. The goal of the music program is to provide the experience of music in a joyful way. From dancing and singing in Primary, through music history and composition in Elementary, all ages are exposed to music and composers from other countries. Upper El and Middle School students may also participate in Band.
Foreign Languages All Ages
Children are exposed to foreign languages as soon as they enter the classroom. In Primary, the exposure may include American Sign Language, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. Formal Spanish instruction begins at age six in Lower Elementary and continues at all upper grade levels. The focus is on oral language with correct pronunciation, building vocabulary and expression.
Physical Fitness All Ages
Fitness in the Primary program is designed to teach motor skills, proper movement patterns and simple games. In the Elementary and Middle School programs, the emphasis shifts to teaching individual skills and how to use them within a team sport. Our goal is to develop confident, healthy children who will continue to enjoy physical activities throughout their lives.
Speech/Language Therapy As Needed
When needed, Undercroft offers speech therapy via an on-site, credentialed speech/language pathologist. Parents who have concerns regarding their child’s speech/language development may consult with this therapist and, if needed, may contract for private therapy conveniently offered on-campus during school hours.
